About the Propane Industry

Propane gas, also known as liquefied petroleum gas (LP Gas), is an approved alternative clean fuel listed in the 1990 Clean Air Act as well as the Energy Policy Act of 1992.  With many of the same clean-burning and economic benefits of natural gas, propane is used by more than 14 million families to fuel their furnaces, water heaters, air conditioners, outdoor grills, fireplaces, dryers and range tops.  Propane is easy to transport and can be used in areas beyond the natural gas mains.  Over 90 percent of the United States’ propane supply is produced domestically.

The propane industry is comprised of nearly 4,000 companies nationwide that employ 96,000 people who provide propane gas to homeowners, builders, farmers, vehicle and forklift fleet managers, and other customers.  The propane industry is decentralized, and many of the companies are small, family-owned independent businesses.  The propane gas industry in this state is made up of over 350 companies who serve 156,000 Kentucky families and customers with clean-burning propane gas.
